Foot Lights

Stairways can be enhanced by the placement of foot lights not only for decorative effect but also to ensure safety.

Choose fixtures with frosted glass or have a shield in order to direct light in a downward position on the side-walls of your stairway at foot level. Start by placing your first light at the bottom stair, spacing them on every second or third step diagonally across from each other so as to avoid a bright stream of light. Placing a brighter lamp on the last and top stair will assist in guiding the start and end point of your stairway.

A new trend for stairway lighting is to embed strip light along the full length of the handrail. The strip light can provide a dramatic focus leading you through your stairway. This may not provide sufficient light for sure footing but is a more enhancing feature. *Installation of your stair lights should be consulted with your electrician and contractor.
