Bathroom Lighting

Create a luxurious bathroom ambience with simple lighting choices to turn your bathroom into a tranquil spa retreat.
Bathrooms require both relaxing and functional lighting. This can be achieved by considering layered lighting as well as making use of dimmers and separate switching.

Ambient Lighting

Your first layer of light to consider is ambient lighting. Ambient light provides general illumination over an entire area and acts as a substitute for natural light at night.

General Lighting

For general lighting, you can make use of a central ceiling light or downlights. Recessed downlights are a versatile, functional and modern source of light that will suit any décor, giving you a gentle and even spread of light.

Task Lighting

Your mirror is the focal point of any bathroom. This is why positioning your task lighting on either side of the mirror is key. Make use of vertical fixtures, pendants or wall sconces. If the lighting fixture is glass, it should be positioned at eye level.

Should the shade be metal, these will need to be positioned slightly higher as the light will be dispersed downwards. This will allow an even spread of light across your face providing shadowless illumination.

Avoid positioning a light above the mirror as this will throw a strong light onto your forehead and cast deep shadows below your eyes, nose and chin.
This type of light is ineffective for shaving, grooming and applying makeup.

Hanging Fittings

You can add personality to your space by including a chandelier or pendant. This will allow you to create ambient light while making an elegant statement to your bathroom.

Due to the damp nature of bathrooms, you may want to consider the material you choose for your light fixture as they may require slightly more maintenance. Selecting the style of your lighting fixtures can be guided by matching your finishes and designs of your taps and shower head.

All light fixtures for bathroom application should be sealed or IP rated, for most purposes IP44 is sufficient. It is important to speak with your electrician prior to purchasing a light suitable for your bathroom alternatively speak to any of our in-house sales consultants.

As bathrooms are sometimes used in the middle of the night you may want to consider LED tape light under a vanity or countertop edge, allowing a soft glow of accent lighting as well as task lighting to move safely around your bathroom allowing your eyes to adjust slowly.
