Understanding IP Ratings

IP stands for Ingress Protection or in other words, the degrees of protection to electronic devices against the intrusion of foreign objects and liquids defined by international standards.

IP Ratings are usually a two-number-system with the first digit being used to rate the protection from ingress of dust and solid foreign objects (such as human hands and fingers, tools and wires or dirt and dust).

Outdoor lighting comes with solid protection numbers from 4-6, with six being suited to dust resistance.

The second digit relates to the rate of protection from ingress of liquid. Fittings resistance rating, for outdoor use, range from 4 to 5, suitable to most weather conditions, which includes light to moderate rain and even showers.

IP44

IP44 – The fixture is protected against solid objects greater than 1.0mm although not dustproof, it is protected against water splashing from any direction.

IP65

This rating means the light fixture is fully dust-tight and is protected against water jets projected by a nosel.
